Nigeria’s aviation industry reached another remarkable milestone on Saturday as Air Peace Limited, the nation’s foremost indigenous carrier, launched its maiden direct flight from Abuja to London Heathrow Airport – a historic achievement that places Nigeria more firmly on the global aviation map.
The event, which took place at the check-in counters of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, radiated excitement and patriotic fervour. Passengers, airline executives, and government dignitaries gathered amid colourful decorations, branded backdrops, and lively entertainment to witness the departure of the inaugural flight to one of the world’s busiest international gateways.
Travellers received special souvenirs, gift packs, and celebratory treats from Air Peace staff as they checked in for the historic journey.
The airline’s management and board were fully represented, including Chairman, Dr Allen Onyema; Vice Chairman, Mrs Alice Onyema; and Directors, Barr. Emeka Ngige (SAN), Mrs Ekaette Monsuru, and Engr. Benedict Adeyileka.
Also in attendance was the Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Dr Obiora Okonkwo, alongside several aviation stakeholders.
Delivering his remarks, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, described the new Abuja–Heathrow service as a monumental diplomatic and operational breakthrough.
He revealed that the success followed intense bilateral discussions between Nigeria and the United Kingdom to secure Heathrow slots for Air Peace under the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA).
“This is a proud day for our nation,” Keyamo declared. “Heathrow is not just another airport – it is the connecting capital of Europe. By gaining access to this global hub, Nigeria demonstrates its insistence on reciprocity, fairness, and the recognition of indigenous carriers in international air travel. The Federal Government remains steadfast in supporting Nigerian airlines to compete favourably on the world stage.”
Representing Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, the Deputy Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, extended warm felicitations to Air Peace on behalf of the Presidency and the Nigerian people.
He praised the airline for deepening competition, improving service quality, and making international air travel more affordable.
“This is not just a triumph for Air Peace,” Hadejia said. “It is a triumph for Nigeria – for every traveller, every businessperson, and every student who now has greater access to the world. The patriotic commitment of Dr Onyema and his team reflects the spirit of Nigerian entrepreneurship that government policies under President Tinubu continue to nurture.”
On behalf of the 10th National Assembly, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, applauded Air Peace’s tenacity, describing the occasion as “a dream fulfilled through the synergy between government facilitation and private-sector vision.”
“When the government clears the runway,” Kalu said, “the private sector takes flight. Dr Onyema’s leadership has become a shining example to young Nigerians that with integrity, innovation and perseverance, our dreams can take wings.”
In his address, Air Peace Chairman, Dr Allen Onyema, expressed heartfelt appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, and all government stakeholders for their unwavering support.
He described the successful launch as “a victory for indigenous capacity, faith, and the enduring spirit of Nigerian enterprise.”
“This route is not merely an expansion of our network – it is a statement of national confidence,” Onyema said. “Air Peace is proud to fly the Nigerian flag at Heathrow, one of the world’s most prestigious aviation hubs. This connectivity will serve not only London but destinations across Europe, North America, and the Caribbean. Indigenous airlines like ours deserve encouragement, because we are proving that Nigerians can deliver world-class aviation service.”
The new route, which officially commenced operations on 26 October 2025, makes Air Peace the first Nigerian carrier to operate direct flights between the nation’s capital, Abuja, and London’s Heathrow Airport.
It follows the airline’s successful Lagos–London Gatwick service launched in March 2024 – a development that redefined affordability and competition in the transcontinental market.
Air Peace’s growth trajectory has been phenomenal. With the largest fleet in West and Central Africa and a network spanning domestic, regional, and intercontinental destinations, the airline continues to pioneer connectivity that fosters tourism, business, and people-to-people exchange.
Industry observers hailed the Abuja–Heathrow route as a defining moment for Nigerian aviation – a sign of strengthened national presence, increased passenger convenience, and new avenues for economic engagement.
With seamless connections from major Nigerian cities through Abuja, the airline promises competitive fares, improved comfort, and an enhanced travel experience.
As the inaugural passengers boarded amidst cheers, music, and flashes of the Nigerian flag, the moment carried a deep symbolism. It was more than the beginning of a new route; it was a reaffirmation of national pride and capability – the story of a nation that believes in its own wings.
When Air Peace Flight P4 761 finally took off, the applause that filled the terminal spoke volumes. Nigeria had not just launched a flight; it had launched a new chapter in its aviation story.
