The Women in Aviation International (WAI), Nigeria Chapter, has honoured outstanding female journalists across Nigeria with the prestigious Aviation Media Awards, in recognition of their dedicated reportage and contributions to the growth and development of the nation’s aviation industry.
The awards were presented on Friday during the glamourous 2025 WAI Annual Conference held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, which is the largest city in West Africa.
In her remarks, the President of the WAI Nigeria Chapter, Dr Rejoice Ndudinachi, praised the media for consistently showcasing Nigeria’s aviation sector locally and on the global stage.
She stressed that excellence in aviation reporting was one of the major drivers of the remarkable achievements recorded within the industry in recent years.
“The media remains a backbone of industry perception. Their consistent reportage helps to positively shape global perspectives about Nigeria’s aviation sector,” Ndudinachi stated.
The recipients expressed gratitude to WAI for giving attention to female media practitioners in a sector that often overlooks their efforts.
Mrs Nosa Aituamen of Radio Nigeria, one of the awardees, said the gesture was rare, noting that journalists, especially females, were seldom recognised for their input in national development.
Mrs Pearl Ngwama, Publisher of JustNews Online, said female reporters had been instrumental in driving positive developments in aviation, adding that their work continued to attract global focus to Nigeria.
Similarly, Mrs Olapeju Olubi of FactsEcho Online described the award as evidence that the efforts of female aviation journalists had not gone unnoticed, while Mrs Kemi Awe of Autoglobe Media Services expressed optimism that the recognition would spur more women journalists to aim higher.
Another awardee, Mrs Itohan Abara-Laserian of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), emphasised that those who understand the role of the media know the press is a partner for change, not an adversary.
Mrs Joy Ogbebor, Chief Executive Officer of MamaJ TV, added that such recognition boosts morale, encouraging journalists to deliver even more diligently.
Other notable recipients included Mrs Henrietta Oke of Swift News; Mrs Chinelo Obogo of The Sun Newspapers; Mrs Sade Williams of Travelport Online; and Mrs Ifeoma Okeke-Korieocha of BusinessDay, among others.
Beyond journalists, the conference also honoured institutions and personalities who have contributed significantly to aviation progress in Nigeria.
Awardees included the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN; the Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo; the Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN); the University Teaching Hospital; and the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, among others.
In a show of royal support, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, was represented at the event.
The conference also featured side attractions such as exhibitions, cultural displays, and colourful state chapter parades, adding vibrancy to the celebration of women making an impact in aviation.
