President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, for what he described as impactful reforms and sustained institutional transformation under his leadership.

The President’s commendation was contained in a statement issued and signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga to mark the 60th birthday of the Customs boss

According to the statement, President Tinubu congratulated Adeniyi on the milestone, noting that it symbolises decades of dedicated service to the nation and a reform-driven tenure that has repositioned the Nigeria Customs Service as a more efficient and globally relevant institution.

The President acknowledged that under Adeniyi’s leadership, the NCS has continued its transition into a modern and competitive Customs administration, aligned with international best practices.

He noted that this progress was further reinforced by the Comptroller-General’s election as Chairman of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council in June 2025, a development he said has elevated Nigeria’s standing within the global Customs community.

“The President notes the remarkable reforms that have repositioned the Nigeria Customs Service and elevated Nigeria’s standing within the global Customs community,” the statement said.

President Tinubu also commended the Customs boss for projecting both Nigeria and Africa on the global stage through what he described as inclusive, practical and charismatic leadership at the WCO.

He highlighted Adeniyi’s role in mobilising Customs administrations and key stakeholders towards the effective implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), particularly through the Customs Partnership of African Cooperation in Trade (C-PACT) platform.

The President further affirmed that the internal reforms introduced under Adeniyi’s leadership, especially in the areas of automation, digitisation, capacity building and high-level international engagement, have translated into measurable gains. These, he said, include improved trade facilitation, enhanced revenue collection and stronger border security.

According to President Tinubu, “the ongoing transformation within the Service reflects purposeful leadership and a deliberate drive to position Nigeria Customs as a model institution in Africa and beyond.”

He added that the Comptroller-General’s leadership has also fostered better community relations, consistent surpassing of revenue targets, stronger trade partnerships with other countries and multilateral institutions, as well as enhanced security across Nigeria’s borders.

“These achievements underscore the value of reform-oriented leadership in strengthening national economic resilience and safeguarding our borders,” the President said.

President Tinubu offered prayers for the Customs chief, asking that God grant him continued strength, good health and wisdom to further serve the nation as he marks another year.
