The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has achieved a significant milestone in its institutional reform journey with the attainment of two globally recognised certifications: ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001:2015 for Environmental Management Systems, a development widely hailed as a turning point for Nigeria’s aviation industry.

The dual certifications were presented to the Managing Director and Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs Olubumi Kuku, at the Authority’s headquarters in Lagos, following months of painstaking preparation, comprehensive internal audits, and systematic improvements across the organisation.

ISO 9001:2015 is an internationally accepted standard that demonstrates an organisation’s capacity to consistently provide services that meet customer and regulatory requirements while embedding a culture of continuous improvement.

ISO 14001:2015, in contrast, focuses on environmental stewardship, confirming that an organisation has effective systems for managing environmental responsibilities, reducing pollution, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, and promoting sustainable operations.

The certifications, awarded by MSECB of Canada, confirm that FAAN’s operational processes and environmental management practices now align with global best practices.

Aviation analysts say the achievement places Nigeria’s airport authority in the league of modern and competitive airport organisations that operate on internationally benchmarked standards.

Observers also describe the development as a defining achievement under the leadership of Kuku, whose tenure has been marked by an emphasis on reform, transparency, and performance-driven management.

Since assuming office, she has championed airport development initiatives and prioritised human capacity building, while driving the Authority towards structured systems and measurable outcomes.

In December 2025, Kuku marked two years as Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, a period that has attracted commendation from staff unions, industry experts, and independent commentators.

Stakeholders attribute much of the Authority’s progress to her insistence on process discipline and international benchmarking, which has gradually repositioned FAAN as a more accountable and forward-looking institution.

Industry insiders note that the ISO certifications are the outcome of a long-term transformation anchored on the implementation of an Integrated Management System (IMS) within FAAN.

The IMS harmonised operational procedures, strengthened internal governance frameworks, and embedded a culture of continuous improvement across departments and airport locations nationwide.

As a result, FAAN is increasingly viewed as an organisation that has moved beyond ad-hoc decision-making to proactive, standards-based governance capable of supporting sustainable airport operations.

The importance of the certifications extends beyond organisational prestige. ISO 9001:2015 ensures that FAAN’s quality management system is centred on customer satisfaction, operational efficiency, risk management, and continuous improvement, leading to more predictable service delivery and enhanced accountability.

ISO 14001:2015 further affirms FAAN’s commitment to environmentally responsible operations, encompassing waste management, resource efficiency, regulatory compliance, and mitigation of environmental impact across Nigeria’s airports.

Collectively, the certifications enhance FAAN’s standing with international airlines, development partners, regulators, and the travelling public, while strengthening the competitiveness of Nigeria’s airports in the global aviation market.

With the certifications secured, stakeholders are now keenly focused on how FAAN will sustain and build upon these standards through regular audits, continuous skills development, environmental innovation, and customer-oriented reforms.

Nonetheless, many industry observers remain optimistic that under Olubumi Kuku’s leadership, the Authority is well positioned to consolidate its gains and further elevate operational and environmental standards across Nigeria’s airport system.
