The welfare of Nigeria’s flight crew community has received a major boost as the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has announced the introduction of a landmark Loss of Licence Insurance scheme for all Nigerian pilots and aircraft engineers.
The programme – launched in Abuja – will provide financial relief to pilots or engineers who are declared medically unfit or otherwise lose their professional licence due to qualifying conditions that make them unable to continue flying or maintaining aircraft. NAAPE partnered with First Standard Insurance Brokers to develop the insurance package.
The measure is a direct response to growing concerns about the vulnerability of highly trained aviation professionals whose careers and incomes can end suddenly because of health-related issues.
President of NAAPE, Captain Bunmi Gindeh, said the Association took the decision after engaging key stakeholders in the industry. He stressed that similar insurance arrangements have long been in place in advanced aviation markets and should not be absent in Nigeria.
“Loss of Licence insurance for aviation professionals has long been a standard benefit in developed aviation markets worldwide. Our members face unique occupational risks that can abruptly end their careers. The goal of this initiative is to ensure that no pilot or engineer is left without financial support if they are declared medically unfit to continue their professional duties,” he said.
Captain Gindeh added that beyond protecting individuals and families, the scheme will also contribute to national aviation safety because a well-supported workforce performs better under pressure and maintains higher safety discipline.
“By introducing this important coverage in Nigeria, we are not only protecting individual professionals and their families, but also strengthening the aviation sector by ensuring that our highly trained workforce can focus on maintaining the highest safety standards, knowing their careers are financially protected against unforeseen medical challenges,” he added.
He assured that NAAPE is actively working to ensure the coverage is affordable and accessible to members across public, private and charter operations.
NAAPE Deputy President, Engr. Mudi Muhammad, also emphasized the relevance of the initiative, recalling that several aviation professionals have struggled financially after losing their licences due to illness.
“We have seen too many of our colleagues face financial hardship after losing their licences due to unexpected medical conditions. This insurance programme ensures that no Nigerian pilot or engineer will face such circumstances alone. It provides a safety net that every aviation professional deserves,” he said.
Industry stakeholders have commended the initiative, describing it as a major step in aligning Nigeria with international labour standards in aviation.
Loss of Licence insurance is widely recognised as a core component of crew protection packages globally, either provided by airlines directly or through professional associations.
NAAPE said further details about premiums, coverage terms and enrolment guidelines will be announced over the coming weeks. The Association will also hold sensitisation workshops across the country to educate members and eligible professionals.
The professional body reiterated that it remains committed to promoting aviation safety, improving members’ welfare, and strengthening the socio-economic well-being of Nigeria’s aviation workforce.
