A 14-year-old boy, identified as Eke Miracle, has been intercepted by security operatives of the Airport Police Command while attempting to stow away on an aircraft at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, in an incident that underscores ongoing concerns about perimeter security at Nigeria’s foremost aviation gateway.

The incident occurred on Monday, 30 March 2026, when the teenager was discovered on the airside tarmac – an area strictly restricted to authorised aviation personnel – allegedly attempting to gain access beneath a parked aircraft.

Aviation authorities describe such actions as not only unlawful but also extremely hazardous, given the severe risks posed by aircraft engines, landing gear systems, and extreme altitude conditions.

According to a statement issued by the Airport Police Command through its spokesperson, ASP Mohammed Adeola, preliminary findings indicate that the minor had unlawfully breached security barriers to access the restricted zone, in violation of regulations stipulated under the byelaws of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). His actions were deemed consistent with a stowaway attempt, a serious security infraction with potentially fatal consequences.

Airport sources note that stowaway incidents, though rare, remain a critical concern for global aviation, as they expose vulnerabilities in airport fencing, surveillance, and access control systems. Industry experts warn that beyond the personal danger to the individual involved, such breaches can disrupt flight operations and pose broader security threats.

Following his apprehension, the teenager was taken into protective custody, with authorities emphasising that all procedures were conducted in strict adherence to child protection guidelines. His parents were promptly informed, and the interview process was carried out in their presence, ensuring that his rights and welfare were safeguarded throughout.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Airport Police Command, Ogunbode Olufunke, reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance stance on security breaches within airport facilities. She described airports as “highly sensitive national assets” that require unwavering vigilance and full compliance with safety protocols.

CP Ogunbode also used the opportunity to caution parents and guardians to pay closer attention to the activities and whereabouts of their children, particularly in environments that pose significant risks. She stressed that early guidance and supervision are crucial in preventing minors from engaging in dangerous acts.

While confirming that due process would be followed, the police stated that the case would be handled in accordance with juvenile justice procedures, with plans to arraign the minor before a competent juvenile court.

The Airport Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a secure aviation environment, noting that collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies, aviation authorities, and the public remain essential to safeguarding Nigeria’s air transport system.
