Dr Allen Onyema, Chairman of leading Nigerian carrier Air Peace, has been conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Public Administration (Honoris Causa) by Abia State University, in recognition of his enduring contributions to education, philanthropy and nation-building.

The prestigious award, which marks Onyema’s fourth honorary doctorate, was presented during the university’s 32nd Convocation Ceremony, an event that brought together an array of eminent scholars, government officials and industry leaders in a celebration of academic excellence and societal impact.

Top officials of the university led the ceremony, including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ndukwe J. Okeudo, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr Agwu U. Agwu, and Registrar Dr Acho Elendu.

The gathering also featured members of the institution’s governing council, senior academic staff and representatives from Air Peace, reflecting the significance of the occasion.

In his acceptance speech, Onyema delivered a passionate call for greater investment in education, describing it as the lifeblood of any thriving nation. He emphasised that while government plays a critical role, the private sector must step forward as an active partner in funding and promoting educational advancement.

“I have always believed strongly in education as the bedrock of national survival. Without it, no society can truly progress. Government cannot do it alone; the private sector must rise to the occasion and support meaningful educational initiatives,” he said.

He further expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, whose nomination he credited as instrumental to the honour. Onyema noted that the recognition symbolises not only personal achievement but also a shared commitment to the advancement of Abia State and the nation as a whole.

Onyema’s latest honour is a testament to his consistent record of humanitarian efforts and strategic contributions to human capital development. Beyond aviation, he has remained a prominent advocate for youth empowerment, education funding and social responsibility.

The conferment reinforces his standing as a business leader whose influence extends well beyond the corporate sphere, reflecting a philosophy that blends enterprise with service to society.

As Nigeria continues to navigate complex development challenges, Onyema’s message at the convocation resonated strongly – highlighting education as a critical pathway to sustainable growth, national unity and long-term prosperity.
