The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken a major step towards promoting environmental sustainability in the nation’s aviation industry with the launch of the first phase of its Sustainable Waste Management Programme at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The initiative, unveiled on Wednesday by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo introduces indoor colour-coded waste recycling bins across the airport terminals as part of a long-term strategy to improve waste management and align Nigeria’s airports with international environmental standards.
Also present at the unveiling were the Chairman of the FAAN Board, Alhaji Umar Ganduje, and the Managing Director and Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku.
The waste management programme is the first of a three-phase initiative designed to encourage responsible waste disposal, improve recycling practices and reduce the environmental footprint of airport operations across the country.
Addressing guests at the launch, Keyamo praised the FAAN management for initiating the project, describing it as another important milestone in the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s airport infrastructure and services.
The Minister said the introduction of organised waste recycling facilities demonstrates the Authority’s determination to build cleaner, greener and more sustainable airports capable of meeting globally recognised environmental standards.
He added that environmental sustainability has become an integral component of modern aviation, stressing that initiatives such as the waste management programme would contribute significantly to preserving the environment while improving the experience of airport users.
In his remarks, Ganduje commended FAAN for taking proactive measures to address environmental concerns within the aviation sector.
He described the initiative as an innovative response to the growing threats posed by climate change and improper waste disposal, urging government agencies, concessionaires, airlines and passengers to play active roles in ensuring the programme succeeds.
According to him, environmental protection requires collective responsibility, adding that the collaboration of all airport stakeholders will be crucial in sustaining the gains of the initiative.
Speaking on the objectives of the programme, Kuku said the Sustainable Waste Management Programme forms part of FAAN’s broader environmental agenda and its commitment to advancing beyond Level 3 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme.
She explained that the Authority is also positioning itself for future waste-to-power initiatives that would transform airport waste into valuable energy resources.
Kuku disclosed that implementation of the programme will take place in three carefully planned phases.
She explained that the first phase focuses on the deployment of indoor colour-coded recycling bins to enable airport users separate waste at the point of disposal.
According to her, the second phase will see the installation of outdoor collection bins throughout the airport environment to expand the waste segregation system beyond terminal buildings.
The final phase, she said, will involve collaboration with certified recycling companies that will collect and process separated waste streams, including plastics, glass, cans and organic materials for recycling and reuse.
She noted that the initiative goes beyond environmental conservation, emphasising that it also makes strong business sense by reducing waste disposal costs, improving operational efficiency and supporting the development of a circular economy.
The FAAN Managing Director further announced that after its successful rollout at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, the programme would be extended to other international airports nationwide in the coming weeks.
She appealed to passengers, airport workers, concessionaires and other stakeholders to embrace proper waste segregation and make effective use of the recycling bins, stressing that widespread participation would be critical to achieving the Authority’s sustainability goals.
The launch of the Sustainable Waste Management Programme highlights FAAN’s renewed commitment to integrating environmental responsibility into airport operations while supporting the Federal Government’s drive to build a more resilient, efficient and environmentally sustainable aviation sector.
