The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has reinforced Nigeria’s commitment to global climate action at the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The minister engaged in high-level discussions, including collaborative sessions with counterparts from the ministries of Environment, Health and Women Affairs for interconnection between aviation and climate change while advocating for sustainable practices across sectors.
In a key meeting with deputy secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Ms. K.O. Barrett the WMO pledged enhanced technical assistance to Nigeria.
The partnership highlights Nigeria’s active role in shaping climate resilience strategies, particularly within the aviation sector.
Addressing a press conference at the Nigerian Pavilion during Nigeria Day, Keyamo, who emphasised the importance of aligning aviation policies with global climate objectives, outlined ongoing reforms to reduce carbon emissions and adopt cleaner energy, stating:
The minister also engaged international stakeholders and investors, presenting Nigeria as a hub for green investment in aviation and aerospace.
Nigeria’s robust presence at COP29 reaffirmed its dedication to global climate partnerships, the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
