Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), operators of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), has received the “Most Fire-Free Public Facility” award from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, a recognition of the terminal’s outstanding fire prevention measures and commitment to maintaining one of the safest public facilities in Nigeria.

The award was presented during the recently concluded Lagos International Fire Safety Conference 3.0 and recognises public institutions that have distinguished themselves in fire safety management, risk mitigation and emergency preparedness.

The honour is the latest endorsement of MMA2’s safety culture, which BASL says has been strengthened through continuous investments in modern fire protection infrastructure, regular staff training, operational discipline and adherence to global aviation safety standards.

As one of Nigeria’s busiest privately operated airport terminals, MMA2 has over the years developed a reputation for maintaining high operational standards while prioritising the safety of passengers, airline operators, concessionaires, employees and other users of the facility.

According to the company, the terminal’s fire safety framework is built around advanced fire detection and suppression equipment, dedicated emergency response teams and detailed emergency preparedness procedures designed to minimise fire risks and ensure swift intervention should any incident occur.

The company also said regular maintenance of fire safety installations, periodic safety audits, emergency simulation exercises and continuous professional development for employees have contributed significantly to its impressive fire safety record.

Commenting on the achievement, the Acting Chief Operating Officer and Head of Space and Premises Management at BASL, Mr Kola Bamigboye, described the recognition as an affirmation of the company’s deliberate strategy of placing safety at the heart of its operations.

He said the award reflected years of sustained investment in safety infrastructure, staff development and operational excellence, stressing that BASL had consistently worked to create a secure environment for everyone using the terminal.

According to him, safety is deeply embedded in the company’s corporate culture and influences every operational decision taken within the organisation.

Bamigboye expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service for recognising the company’s efforts, noting that the award would inspire BASL to continue improving its safety systems and maintaining world-class operational standards.

Also speaking on the recognition, the Head of Aviation Safety at BASL, Mrs Nafisat Adeniran, said the award was evidence of the effectiveness of the company’s proactive approach to safety management.

She explained that preventing emergencies requires continuous vigilance, strict compliance with safety regulations, regular risk assessments, emergency drills and the collective commitment of every member of staff.

Adeniran noted that the recognition would further motivate the organisation to strengthen its safety management systems, embrace international best practices and sustain MMA2’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s safest airport terminals.

She added that safety remains a shared responsibility across all departments of the company, with every employee playing a critical role in preventing incidents before they occur.

BASL reiterated that safety remains the foundation of its business philosophy and pledged to continue setting the pace in safety, innovation and operational excellence within the Nigerian aviation industry.

The company further dedicated the award to its workforce, airline customers, concessionaires, regulatory agencies, business partners and other stakeholders whose collaboration has helped preserve the terminal’s outstanding safety record.

Developed under Nigeria’s first major Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement in the airport sector, MMA2 continues to position itself as a model for modern airport management through sustained investment in infrastructure, customer service, innovation and safety.

The latest recognition is expected to further enhance the terminal’s reputation as a benchmark for fire safety and emergency preparedness in Nigeria’s aviation industry, reinforcing BASL’s commitment to providing passengers and other airport users with a safe, secure and efficient travel experience.
