Director General, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority NCAA Chris Najomo says there is need for more regulated operating environment for Airstrip operations
Najomo who made this known today in lagos at the first Airstrip Owners and Operator’s stakeholder Engagement Programme, noted that the timing for the conference is apt , adding that in the early stage, Aviation focused more on machines and men as there was little or no consideration for the operating environment
He however stressed that “Both the global and regional bodies are now awake to the realities that a poorly regulated aircraft operating environment spells doom for the industry”
He said “It is based on this premise that we decided to focus on all types of Aerodrome in a bid to expand and intensify regulatory oversight over them in the interest of safety”
He emphasized that with the regulatory duties that reside with the NCAA, as enshrined in the Civil Aviation Act 2022, the stakeholder meeting is in fulfillment of the mandate, with emphasis on Airstrip operations
“While ICAO Annex 14, volume specifies standards for certification of Aerodrome , these standards may be considered over reaching for Airstrip
The NCAA Boss noted that in line with the ease of doing business principles “The NCAA is working tirelessly to promulgate regulations customised for Airstrip, which would be a catalyst for the promotion and development of general Aviation, while of course maintaining safety standards ”
Najomo disclosed that there are about 92 Airstrip in Nigeria based on the existing NCAA Airstrip Database, which consist of the operational, non operational, while some are under rehabilitation and others are entirely new constructions, adding that only a few are up to date with valid operational permits.
He stressed that this stakeholder Engagement has five major objectives which includes, to clarify regulatory requirements applicable to Airstrip constructions and safety standards
To identify and address challenges faced by state and private Airstrip operators.
To promote the adoption of global best practices in Airstrip operations and management
Najomo commended the NCAA Director of Aerodrome and Airspace standards and his team for facilitating the programme
The theme for the stakeholder Engagement is “Enhancing safety, Compliance, and Collaboration for Efficient Airstrips Operations “
