Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) Plc has reinforced its prominence in Nigeria’s aviation landscape following its designation as the sole ground handling service provider at the newly commissioned Gateway International Airport in Iperu, Ogun State.
The inauguration of the airport by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks a defining moment in the country’s ongoing drive to expand and modernise aviation infrastructure. The project is expected to position Ogun State as a vital gateway for passenger travel and cargo logistics, enhancing its role in regional and national economic activities.
SAHCO’s exclusive appointment at the airport reflects industry-wide confidence in its operational capability, safety culture, and consistent delivery of high-quality aviation services. The company’s involvement from the outset is also seen as a critical factor in ensuring that the airport begins operations on a strong and efficient footing.
Speaking on the development, Chairman of SAHCO, Barrister Dr Taiwo Afolabi (CON), described the milestone as a significant achievement for the company and a clear demonstration of the trust it has earned over the years.
He emphasised that SAHCO remains committed to advancing the aviation sector through strategic investments in modern technology, workforce development, and service innovation.
According to Afolabi, the company is well-prepared to deliver seamless ground handling services at the new airport, noting that its experience across multiple airports nationwide has equipped it with the expertise required to manage complex aviation operations efficiently.
He also highlighted SAHCO’s partnership with Allied Air, a leading Nigerian cargo airline, as a major boost to the airport’s cargo handling capabilities.
The collaboration is expected to enhance the processing and movement of goods, particularly those that are time-sensitive or of high value, through a state-of-the-art warehouse facility designed to handle both imports and exports.
Industry observers believe that this enhanced cargo capacity will play a pivotal role in supporting key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and e-commerce, thereby contributing to broader economic growth and diversification.
During the commissioning ceremony, SAHCO delivered a comprehensive range of ground handling services, including ramp operations, passenger assistance, cargo handling, and general operational support. These services ensured the smooth execution of the event and underscored the company’s readiness to manage full-scale airport operations.
The Gateway International Airport is widely expected to stimulate economic development by improving connectivity, reducing travel bottlenecks, and opening new channels for trade and investment. Its strategic location further enhances its potential to serve as a logistics hub within the region.
With SAHCO firmly in place as the exclusive ground handling partner, stakeholders are optimistic that the airport will maintain high standards of efficiency and service delivery from inception.
As Nigeria continues to expand its aviation network, SAHCO has reiterated its resolve to remain at the forefront of the industry, driving operational excellence and contributing to the sustainable growth of the nation’s air transport ecosystem.
