The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has lauded the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for his sustained support towards the development and operational enhancement of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA), Enugu, describing his interventions as pivotal to the airport’s growing stature as a compliant international gateway.

In a formal letter dated 14 April 2026, FAAN, in collaboration with the management of AIIA, expressed “profound gratitude” to the governor for the donation of a brand-new Toyota Hilux vehicle to the airport.

The Authority noted that the gesture comes at a critical time and will significantly improve operational efficiency and service delivery at the facility.

Beyond the donation, FAAN highlighted Governor Mbah’s broader contributions to the airport’s development, particularly his role in facilitating progress towards international certification.

The Authority praised his “unwavering support, remarkable doggedness and strategic interventions,” which it said have been instrumental in aligning the airport with global aviation standards.

The Akanu Ibiam International Airport, one of Nigeria’s key international gateways in the South-East region, has in recent years undergone significant upgrades aimed at meeting the stringent requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Airport certification is a globally recognised process that ensures compliance with safety, security, and operational standards.
Industry experts note that certification enhances an airport’s credibility, attracts international airlines, and boosts regional economic development through increased passenger traffic and cargo operations.

Nigeria, through FAAN and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), has intensified efforts to certify major airports nationwide as part of a broader aviation sector reform agenda.

The Enugu airport, which previously underwent major runway rehabilitation and infrastructure upgrades, plays a crucial role in connecting the South-East to international destinations, particularly for business and diaspora travel.

FAAN further disclosed its intention to pay a courtesy visit to Governor Mbah to formally present the airport’s certification once it is officially issued.

According to the Authority, the planned presentation is both symbolic and strategic, representing the collective efforts of stakeholders while reinforcing alignment with the state’s developmental agenda.

The Authority reiterated its appreciation of the governor’s leadership and expressed optimism about strengthening collaboration for the sustained growth of the airport.

Reports indicate that Governor Mbah’s administration has prioritised infrastructure development as a cornerstone of its economic strategy, with aviation seen as a key enabler of trade, tourism, and investment inflows into Enugu State and the wider South-East region.
