A new chapter in Nigeria’s aviation development unfolded on Saturday as the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, joined Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, to witness the historic inaugural international flight from Victor Attah International Airport to Kotoka International Airport.
The milestone event formally signals the commencement of international flight operations from Uyo, a development widely regarded as a strategic leap towards decentralising Nigeria’s aviation sector and strengthening regional air connectivity within West Africa.
The inaugural flight, bound for Accra, Ghana, departed amid a festive atmosphere, with aviation stakeholders, government officials, and passengers gathered to witness what many described as a defining moment for Akwa Ibom State.
The ceremony underscored the growing significance of subnational contributions to national aviation growth.
Addressing attendees, Keyamo emphasised that the development aligns with the Federal Government’s broader agenda to expand infrastructure, stimulate economic activity, and enhance connectivity across the country.
He noted that enabling more airports to handle international operations would not only ease congestion at established hubs but also unlock new economic corridors.
“This is a clear demonstration of what is possible when state governments invest strategically in aviation infrastructure,” the minister stated, adding that the initiative reflects a shared commitment to advancing Nigeria’s position in the global aviation network.
Governor Umo Eno, in his remarks, described the inaugural flight as the realisation of a long-held vision to position Akwa Ibom as a gateway for commerce, tourism, and international engagement.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining investments that would attract global partners and enhance the state’s economic prospects.
According to him, the launch of the Uyo–Accra route will provide greater convenience for travellers, eliminate the need for connecting flights through other cities, and open new opportunities for businesses operating within the region.
Experts in the aviation sector have noted that the commencement of international flights from Uyo represents a broader shift in Nigeria’s aviation dynamics, where more states are beginning to play active roles in developing world-class airport infrastructure. This evolution is expected to foster competition, improve service delivery, and expand access to international travel.
The economic implications of the new route are also considerable. Analysts project that increased passenger movement will drive growth in sectors such as hospitality, logistics, and tourism.
Furthermore, improved connectivity with Accra – a major West African commercial hub – is expected to strengthen trade ties and facilitate smoother business exchanges within the subregion.
The route is particularly significant within the framework of regional integration, as it supports the movement of people and goods across member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
By linking Uyo directly to Accra, the service enhances mobility and contributes to the realisation of a more interconnected West African economy.

The Victor Attah International Airport, which has undergone extensive upgrades over the years, is now equipped to handle international operations, including modern passenger facilities and enhanced safety systems.
