The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has announced the successful installation of Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN) systems in 26 airports across the country, marking a major leap forward in the nation’s air traffic management capacity.

The milestone was highlighted at a sensitisation workshop held in Lagos, where the Director of Air Traffic Services, Mr John Tayo, formally opened the event and underscored the significance of the new systems.

“These installations represent another demonstration of NAMA’s commitment to safety, efficiency, and technological advancement in Nigeria’s aviation sector,” Tayo declared.

“The modernised AFTN operates on robust satellite facilities, delivering improved reliability, broader coverage, and greater message transmission efficiency. It also serves as a dependable alternative to the Air Traffic Service Message Handling System (AMHS),” he added.

Explaining the benefits of the upgraded infrastructure, Tayo noted that AFTN remains the backbone of aeronautical communication worldwide. Its functions include the timely transmission of flight plans, meteorological updates, and urgent safety information – critical elements that directly support flight safety.

“With its standardised protocols, AFTN ensures seamless communication between Nigeria and other states within the ICAO network, strengthening our integration into the global aviation community,” he added.

The rollout across 26 airports provides Nigeria with nationwide coverage and a resilient communication framework that is expected to support long-term growth in the aviation industry.

The sensitisation workshop in Lagos was convened to provide technical and operational personnel with hands-on training on the features and functionalities of the new system. Participants were also expected to gain skills in managing and troubleshooting the installations for optimal performance.

According to Tayo, the event also served as a platform to share best practices, build technical capacity, and reinforce the strategic role of aeronautical communication in NAMA’s drive for safe, efficient, and cost-effective air navigation services.

Concluding his remarks, the Director emphasised the importance of professionalism in sustaining the system’s value:

“The success of this infrastructure depends not just on its installation, but on how well we operate and maintain it. Let us approach this responsibility with dedication and make Nigeria’s aeronautical communication network a source of pride for Africa.”
