The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has received Aerodrome Certificates for the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, and the Obafemi Awolowo International Airport, Port Harcourt, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s quest to strengthen aviation safety and operational standards.

The certificates were formally issued by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) at an official ceremony held on Friday, December 19, 2025, underscoring the country’s commitment to compliance with international aviation safety benchmarks.

Speaking at the ceremony, FAAN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, described the development as a landmark achievement that goes beyond regulatory compliance, reflecting resilience, dedication and a shared resolve to uphold the highest standards of aviation safety in Nigeria.

On behalf of FAAN’s Board, Management and staff, Kuku expressed deep appreciation to the NCAA under the leadership of its Director General, Captain Chris Najomo, for what she described as a historic and consequential process.

“This ceremony is not merely a procedural formality; it is a powerful testament to resilience, dedication, and a shared commitment to the highest standards of aviation safety in Nigeria,” she said.

Kuku noted that the successful certification of the two international airports was the outcome of exemplary inter-agency cooperation, characterised by rigorous inspections, constructive engagement and the systematic exchange of corrective action notices and implementation plans.

She emphasised that the NCAA played a dual role throughout the process – not only as a regulator but also as a strategic partner – providing clear guidance, technical expertise and thorough oversight to ensure strict adherence to standard and recommended practices.

According to her, FAAN operational teams in Kano and Port Harcourt, with strong backing from the Authority’s headquarters, demonstrated unwavering commitment in meeting and, in some cases, exceeding the stringent requirements set by the regulator.

“This synergistic partnership, where the regulator guides and the operator implements, is the very model of how we can collectively elevate Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure. Today’s certificates are a shared trophy, earned through a collaborative spirit that places national interest and safety above all else,” Kuku stated.

While receiving the certificates, the FAAN chief acknowledged the NCAA’s observations regarding outstanding items in the corrective action plans and assured the regulator of FAAN’s full compliance.

She disclosed that dedicated teams and processes had already been activated to address the identified issues with urgency and precision, stressing that the Authority viewed the corrective actions as an integral part of its continuous improvement drive.

“Our goal is absolute compliance, and we will not rest until every single item is conclusively resolved,” she said.

Kuku described the certification of the two airports as a strategic pillar for growth within Nigeria’s aviation sector, noting that it boosts airline confidence, assures passengers of enhanced safety standards, and strengthens Nigeria’s credibility within the global aviation community.

According to her, the development sends a clear signal that Nigerian airports are operated with integrity, professionalism and in strict conformity with international best practices.

She concluded by commending the professionalism of the NCAA leadership and staff, describing their role as instrumental to the success recorded.

She also paid glowing tribute to FAAN personnel across various units, including engineers, firefighters, air traffic controllers, security operatives, maintenance crews and management staff, whose behind-the-scenes efforts made the achievement possible.

Special recognition was given to the Directorate of Operations, led by Captain Abdullahi Mahmood, whom she credited for playing a pivotal role in the certification process.

Kuku further thanked industry partners and stakeholders for their sustained support, expressing confidence that the milestone would be sustained and built upon in the years ahead.

“Together, we have reached this milestone. Together, we will sustain and build upon it,” she said, while praying for continued progress and safety in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
