President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on Saturday, December 20, 2025, formally inaugurated the newly built and upgraded terminal at the General Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Maiduguri, Borno State, further underscoring the Federal Government’s commitment to the modernisation of Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure.
The President, who serves as the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, performed the commissioning by cutting the ceremonial tape, officially declaring the facility open for operations.
The event marked a significant step in efforts to enhance air transport services and improve passenger experience, particularly in the North-East region.
Also present at the ceremony were the Executive Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum; the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda; the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo; and the Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs Olubunmi Kuku. They were joined by other senior government officials and aviation industry stakeholders.
The terminal project was delivered through a partnership between the Borno State Government and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, with supervision provided by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
The collaboration was described as a model of effective inter-governmental cooperation aimed at delivering critical infrastructure that meets modern standards.
According to officials, the upgraded terminal is equipped to handle growing passenger volumes, improve operational efficiency and ensure safer, more comfortable travel for airport users.
The development is expected to boost economic activities, facilitate business and humanitarian operations, and strengthen Maiduguri’s role as a key aviation hub in the North-East.
The commissioning ceremony attracted dignitaries from across the country, reflecting the national importance of the project and its impact on the broader aviation sector. Many attendees described the terminal as a symbol of progress, resilience and renewed investment in Borno State.
