Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, Wuraola Adepoju has called on corporate bodies to assist the service in the provision of facilities especially in the area of passport acquisition for improved service delivery.
Adepoju who made this known in Lagos, at the Ikoyi Passport Office during the commissioning of a 30KVA inverter and a new information centre noted that; the issue of power, is one of the major problem the service is faced with especially as it affects passport application.
She stated that”So for this intervention by Heirs holding, I want to let you know that you have made a very great impact on our service delivery. The intervention will go a long way to assist us because on a number of occasions, we have down time in our passport processing because there may be system failure with Internet because of electricity and the cost of diesel is exorbitant ”
The NIS Comptroller General also disclosed that the service is faced with the problem of inadequate facilities in Nigeria and the diaspora, as the service is having challenges in meeting the demands of passport applicants.
She stressed that since she came on board as Comptroller General of NIS, she has been exposed to the hardship Nigerians go through in processing passports.
She noted that “The demand for passport in the recent past has been unprecedented in the history of this nation. The number of Nigerians that are travelling in search of greener pastures, education or family relocation and all those , has really really increase and that has made the demand for travel documents especially the Nigerian passport very high”
Adepoju however called for help from corporate bodies to assist the NIS with the provision of facilities as they don’t have the machinery to work with the number of Nigerians seeking for passports , both locally and in the diaspora, the demand for passport is high.
Adepoju, commended the efforts of the Minister of Interior, Olubumi Tunji-Ojo in trying to address the problems of the immigration service since the assumption of office; for improved service delivery.
Non executive Director Heirs group Awele Elumelu while speaking at the ceremony stated that the company’s drive and believe in the mission of improving life and transforming Africa is what led to them donating the solar power system to the NIS ikoyi passport office to tackle power supply challenge and improve service delivery
She stated that “We know this has been the problem with the NIS in the passport office in particular, so we are happy and looking forward, as we believe this will help to drastically reduce the time it takes for the issuance of passport ”
She commended the NIS for the work they do, as it is not easy dealing with issues of Nigeria despite all the challenges.
Earlier the Comptroller lagos state passport command Nfom Udoh had appreciated Heirs group for the kind gesture and assured that the Projects will be properly utilised.
