As the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria FAAN begins implementation of the new cashless payment policy at airport’s access gates, commuters heading to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos, were trapped in a long gridlock on Tuesday.

The cashless policy which is meant to ease payment and modernise toll collection rather left commuters and vehicles stranded along the busy airport corridor.

The policy designed to digitise toll payments and eliminate cash handling, triggered a massive backlog as many motorists encountered the system for the first time.

Drivers were forced to pause at the gate to figure out electronic payment options, slowing traffic and creating a ripple effect of congestion that stretched far beyond the airport entrance.

Security officials and traffic managers were on ground to control the swelling queue but at FAAN at Different intervals opened up a non payment window of two minutes to ease the congestion

For many travelers racing against time to catch flights, the unexpected delay added anxiety to an already busy travel schedule.

Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection FAAN, Henry Agbebire, in an interview says the cashless system is a Federal Government policy, noting that traffic challenges often accompany the introduction of new reforms.

He apologised to commuters for the inconvenience and assured that the agency is working to ease the situation.

Agbebire added that users have been onboarded onto the cashless platform between October 2025 and February 2026
